Oak Shores Materials Handling Unit

MAKING ACCESS EASIER, SAFER AND QUIETER FOR REMEDIATION WORK.

OAKRIDGE APARTMENTS, QUEENSTOWN.

PROJECT

Located on the Queenstown lakefront, Oak Shores is a four-block, multi-unit hotel/apartment complex that required some remediation work to the external cladding, structural elements, balconies, balustrades, exterior and interior walls, window joinery and roofs. Disruption minimisation including noise and dust was of high priority, being an operating hotel environment at the time. To minimise the need for construction traffic on the complex’s access road, Brosnan partnered with Farra to develop a bespoke Materials Handling Unit (MHU). The MHU is installed away from the access road to bring in supplies, remove waste materials with minimal safety risk, and streamline site operations.

ROLE

Designed to be safer, more reliable, and efficient the Material Handling Unit (MHU)  enables the movement of building materials throughout the construction sites without the use of tower cranes and has been designed to transport people and items up and down steep inclines.

The Material Handling Unit comprises of a dual transfer track system running the length of the desired location which can be designed to suit narrow site constraints and difficult topography. It featured secured loading and unloading stations along the track system allowing access to multiple levels. An auto levelling, cantilevered carriage rated to 2500kg traversed the track via a custom-designed dual rope hoist system, ensuring quick, easy and safe access to the secured loading and unloading stations.

RESULTS

The Material Handling Unit (MHU) has been an ideal solution for a location that had specific site and access challenges over the last 5 years and has now been decommissioned at the successful completion of the remediation work.
