New Life For Old Parts

Onsite machining repairs keep Matahina Hydro Station powering on.

At the start of 2018, Matahina Hydro Station approached Farra due to an issue with fretted rotary connection bolts. To inspect the issue there was only one access point which entailed climbing into a hole that was 25cm wide x 40cm across x 60cm across the back and was at 40 degrees centigrade - luckily our machining manager isn’t claustrophobic! To repair the damage, a Farra crew of eight were onsite in Whakatane for 12 weeks.

"Big thanks from the Trustpower team to your team for their efforts... It’s highly appreciated having skilled and well-resourced staff available for this type of work."

To do the repairs the team modified and reconfigured the boring machine used for the Burrinjuck job and used it to repair similar issues within the Matahinia Station. As well as the repairs onsite, a new set of pole keys were designed and manufactured in the workshop.

The team would love to thank Trustpower for the care they received in terms of their health and wellbeing. A regular highlight being the smoothie truck that came twice a week.
