Crane Upgrade

Ohau Dam upgrade ensures minimal disruption to operation.

In 2016, Farra Engineering was asked to complete an inspection on two of Ohau A Dam's cranes. During this inspection, it was found that there were wiring and control upgrades needed for the cranes that had been previously upgraded in 2000. In 2017, Farra was appointed the head contractor for the Crane Upgrade project. It was important to complete the work in a manner which ensured minimal disruption to the operation of the station. This is why only one crane was fitted and tested at one time.

The project involved major mechanical inspections and electrical upgrades of both crane’s wiring and controls.  The refurbishment program incorporated the main hoist electrical control to create tandem crane control.  The ability to control the cranes in tandem enabled the cranes to be operated in sync for extra lifting power.

The upgrades took approximately 7 months to complete as there were associated maintenance requirements identified throughout the refurbishment project.   Extensive testing was performed onsite by both Farra and independent crane engineers to ensure the solutions executed were fit for purpose in every way. The project was finished and signed off on 3rd May 2018.
