The milliscreen manufactured by Farra Engineering of Dunedin is specially designed for separating solids and liquids, screening, filtration and dewatering. The most common application for the screens is removing suspended solids from industrial and municipal sewage waste waters but is also used in vegetable processing plants and during grape processing for the wine industry.

The screens are constructed entirely in 304 or 316 grade stainless steel dependent on application. The waste water enters the hydro chamber which has a specifically designed baffle system that reduces the velocity of the incoming waste water and results in an even flow over the three sided weir onto the screen. The milliscreen rotates at a constant speed with the cleaned water passing through the wedge wire screen and the solid waste materials are expelled out the end of the barrel for disposal or further processing.

The screens are self cleaning with internal and external sparge pipes with low and high pressure water jets that remove what little physical blockage may occur. This self cleaning means more capacity, greater efficiency and a reduction in maintenance downtime.

The Farra screens are available in a number of sizes that handle volumes from 230 litres per minute up to 180,000 litres per minute and can be positioned in parallel to further increase capacity. The mesh opening size range allows a screen to be optimised for particular applications, whether it be food industry discharges or waste water treatment from City Councils.

The screens are in use throughout the country and include installations at the Napier, Queenstown and Timaru City Councils waste water treatment plants.
